Zero conditional — verdades generales
If + present simple, present simple.
If you heat water to 100°C, it boils. · If I eat late, I don't sleep well.
First conditional — futuro real y probable
If + present simple, will + infinitivo.
If it rains tomorrow, we'll cancel the trip. · If you study hard, you'll pass the exam.
Error típico: usar "will" también después de "if" ("if it will rain") — nunca va "will" en la parte del "if".
Second conditional — hipótesis presente o futura improbable
If + past simple, would + infinitivo. Situaciones imaginarias, poco probables o directamente imposibles ahora mismo.
If I won the lottery, I would travel the world. · If I were you, I wouldn't say that.
Con el verbo "to be" en la parte del "if", lo correcto en inglés formal es usar "were" para todas las personas ("if I were, if he were"), aunque en inglés hablado también se oye "was".
Third conditional — hipótesis sobre el pasado
If + past perfect, would have + participio.
If I had known you were coming, I would have cooked something special. · If she had studied more, she wouldn't have failed.
Mixed conditionals
A veces una condición pasada tiene una consecuencia en el presente: if + past perfect, would + infinitivo.
If I hadn't missed the flight, I would be in Rome right now.
Alternativas a "if" que también aparecen en el examen: unless (= if not: Unless you hurry, you'll miss the train), as long as / provided that (= solo si: You can go out as long as you're back by ten), in case (= por si acaso: Take an umbrella in case it rains).
