Repaso rápido: a / an / the

a/an se usa la primera vez que mencionas algo contable en singular, sin especificar cuál (I saw a dog). the se usa cuando ya es conocido o específico para ambos hablantes (The dog was barking — el mismo perro de antes).

Cuándo NO se usa ningún artículo (zero article)

CasoEjemplo correcto
Nombres plurales o incontables en sentido generalDogs are loyal animals. (NO "The dogs")
ComidasWe usually have breakfast at eight.
IdiomasShe speaks Japanese fluently.
La mayoría de países, ciudades y callesI live in Spain, in Madrid.
Deportes y asignaturasHe's good at tennis and maths.
Instituciones usadas para su función principalShe's at school. / He's in hospital.

El error más frecuente: generalizar con "the"

En español decimos "la vida es difícil" o "me gustan los animales", y la tentación es traducir "the life" o "the animals" — pero para hablar en general, el inglés no usa artículo: Life is difficult. · I like animals.

Sin "the" (función habitual)Con "the" (edificio concreto)
go to school (como alumno)go to the school (al edificio, por otro motivo)
go to bed (a dormir)sit on the bed (el mueble)
go to hospital (como paciente, UK)go to the hospital (visitar a alguien)
go to prison (como preso)go to the prison (de visita)
